TY
STAUFFER NAMED USC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
From the Messenger-Inquirer
by Jim Pickens

United's new chief eager for club to ramp
up
Ty Stauffer, new executive director of Owensboro
United Soccer Club, envisions a time when the city's
amateur soccer teams can go head-to-head with the
best teams in Kentucky and win with consistency.
For this to transpire, Stauffer believes United must
place its emphasis and focus on teaching and
practicing the basic fundamentals of the sport.
"There are very good soccer players in this town,
already," Stauffer said. "The problem is that there
may be only three or four in each age group, and to
win at the highest levels you have to put together a
team of great players.
"It doesn't take an opposing coach long to find a
team's weak spot, and I firmly believe that a team
is only as strong as its weakest link.
"If you don't have any weak links, you've got a
great team. That's the whole idea here."
Stauffer, 39, joins United six years after launching
the highly successful Sports Tutor Academy, which
teaches the fundamental skills of soccer through
Futsal, a soccer-like game played on hard surfaces
with a heavy, low-bounce ball.
"I started the business because I noticed a
breakdown of fundamental skills when I watched young
players compete," Stauffer said. "In general, there
was no creativity, no fluidity, and the vast
majority of kids unable to use their opposite foot.
"Futsal slows the game down and provides youngsters
a chance to put what they learn into practice, and
the more repetitions a player receives, the more
skilled, the more instinctive he becomes."
Stauffer's Futsal program, featuring up to 700
players ranging from 3 years old to college-age in
the winter, has become nationally renowned. This
year, three local teams competed in a national
tournament and two returned with championship
trophies.
"We've got some young kids who can flat-out play,"
Stauffer said. "Kids everywhere else have been
playing year-around for many years. We're just
starting to have a large number of players do that,
and it makes a difference."
Stauffer hopes to blend the training methods from
Sports Tutor Academy with the reputation and
popularity United Soccer Club has garnered through
the years.
"Taking the strengths of both entities and combining
them will make our soccer community much stronger,"
Stauffer said. "Scott Pulliam and others before him
have done a great job in establishing United Soccer
Club, which has always had a great overall program,
and quality coaching, too.
"There has been an inconsistency in terms of
training structure and style of play, however, and
we need for all the different age groups to be on
the same page as much as possible. This way, there
will be a continuity for players through the years
in terms of what they're taught and how they're
taught to play the game."
Futsal slows the game down enough for players to
fully execute learned fundamentals, and the
transition of those skills to the soccer pitch is a
natural progression, Stauffer said.
"Once a skill is learned and can be executed,
utilizing that skill in soccer must become
instinctive," he said. "You don't have time to think
as much as react."
Stauffer cited the late Scott York, a record-setting
goal-scorer for Apollo High School in the early
1990s.
"York was a great player who was way, way, way ahead
of his time," Stauffer said. "Everything he did was
instinctive. He did what he did quicker and better
than anyone else, and that provided him a tremendous
advantage during the era he played.
"He was amazingly gifted, but he also played with
great passion. You could watch him one time and tell
the game meant a lot to him. For United to be the
best we can be, our players must have that same type
of passion."
Stauffer acknowledges that statewide success for
United won't be achieved overnight.
"It will take a lot of time and diligence, but I
believe we can get there," he said. "United is
regarded out in the state as a good, solid, stable
soccer club, but we would like to take it to the
next level in terms of viability and visibility.
"We want (an NCAA Division I) coach to be scouting a
tournament and say, 'That kid must be from Owensboro
because of the way he plays.' We want to have a
little better reputation among big-time collegiate
soccer programs."
Stauffer played soccer and basketball at
Kentucky Wesleyan College. He was a member of
the 1991
NCAA Division II basketball team and was
selected Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the
Year in soccer his senior season.
Stauffer coached the Wesleyan women's basketball
team in 1993 and 1994 and started the KWC women's
soccer program in 1994.
Within the structure of United Soccer Club, Stauffer
replaces Pulliam, now the club's coaching director.

Owensboro United Soccer Club and SportsTutor
Futsal Academy form Partnership
Owensboro United Soccer Club and SportsTutor Futsal
Academy have announced a newly formed soccer
partnership creating the United SportsTutor Academy.
Their goal is to unite the soccer
community—coaches, players, parents, and
organizations—by offering a consistent and
well-designed training environment. Additionally,
the academy hopes to encourage and identify young
players who can eventually matriculate into
United’s competitive soccer program.
"By implementing a progressive program that grows in
complexity as the players mature and develop, we
hope to ultimately produce players that more
consistently compete successfully on the state and
regional level,” said Ty Stauffer, Director/Owner of
SportsTutor.
“We hope to capitalize on the respective strengths
of each organization. Owensboro United’s existing
club structure and SportsTutor’s youth development
futsal programs,” said Scott Pulliam Executive
Director at Owensboro United.
The United SportsTutor Academy will focus on
systematically developing young soccer players in
the U7, U8, U9 age groups. Pulliam continues, “It
is essential that young and beginning players
develop solid fundamental skills as a foundation for
future development. They will be better prepared to
play the game on a higher and more technical level
as they mature and face higher levels of
competition. That is why the Academy will be so
beneficial and should advance the level of play."
“SportsTutor has developed a solid curriculum and
reputation for developing young technical players.
We have had success competing regionally in futsal
but have limited structure for our players outdoor
soccer needs,” said Stauffer.
By forming this partnership, the area will now have
the essential tools needed to develop knowledgeable,
skilled and competitive players.
